Mission & Values

Mission Statement

Stronger Generations is an initiative that partners with community members, patients, and a network of organizations to support pregnant and parenting people in the Boston community. We strive to improve maternal and child health through programs focused on holistic and equitable health and wellness, social support, and building opportunity.

The Stronger Generations Initiative is led by the Center for Community Health and Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Core Values and Beliefs

At Stronger Generations, we uphold the following values and beliefs in each area of our work and practice. We believe that:

  • Every baby deserves the healthiest start possible.
  • A lifetime of health equity begins at birth.
  • Health is a human right.
  • Parenthood can be a positive opportunity for growth in a young person’s life.
  • Social opportunity should be equitable for all people.
  • Structural racism is the root cause of health and social inequities.
  • There is power in collaboration among organizations, allies, institutions, and communities.

Guiding Frameworks

Our work is guided by:

  • Community voice, collective action, and the lived experiences of those we partner with.
  • The social and political determinants of health
  • Reproductive Justice:
    • The human right to maintain personal bodily autonomy, have children, or not have children and
    • The right to parent the children we have in safe and sustainable communities.
  • Healing Centered Engagement:
    • Communities, and individuals who experience trauma are agents in restoring their own well-being
    • Healing centered engagement is culturally grounded and views healing as the restoration of identity.
    • Healing centered engagement is asset driven and focuses well-being we want, rather than symptoms we want to suppress.
